Introduction to Archival Practice

Course duration: September 14 - November 23, 2026

Registration: June 1 - August 21, 2026

Using Laura Millar's award-winning publication Archives: Principles and Practices, students will be introduced to archival terminology & theory, best practices for managing archival records, copyright & privacy, ethics, and preserving electronic records. This course will benefit those who are new to archives, as well as staff or volunteers working in libraries, museums, records management, local government, administration, art galleries or non-profit institutions that have archival records in their holdings and would like to learn more about them.

Topics for the modules include:

Module 1. What are Archives

Module 2. Archival Institutions and the Role of the Archivist

Module 3. Fundamental Principles of Archives

Module 4. Appraisal and Acquisition

Module 5. Arrangement and Description

Module 6. Making Archives Available

Module 7. Preservation and the Digital World

Students will also receive, by electronic mail, a self-study guide which includes instructions, supplementary reading (where applicable), self-study questions, and in most modules, a practical project. The self-study questions and projects will be submitted to the Instructor for evaluation. Upon completing all the projects within the allotted time, students will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course.

Students can expect to work about 10-12 hours per week on readings and assignments for the duration of the course.

Workshop: An Introduction to Archival Repatriation

Workshop overview:

This workshop will provide a broad introductory overview of the concept and practice of archival repatriation. This workshop will cover everything from the history of repatriation to practical solutions for implementing repatriation projects at your institution. We will discuss a range of approaches to repatriation such as community access, digital repatriation, shared stewardship agreements, and physical repatriation. The workshop will use real-life examples and provide opportunities to brainstorm practical solutions for your organization. A focus of the workshop will be on the importance of relationships. Please bring examples from your archive or workplace that you would like to explore.

Participants will learn:

The role that relationships play in a successful repatriation project
How to apply legislation and policy to support repatriation projects
How to determine the right kind of repatriation project for the partner community

Instructors:

Angie Bain is a professional researcher with the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs. She is a member of the Lower Nicola Indian Band of the Nlaka'pamux Nation. Angie's work has specialized in land claims, indigenous laws, and community histories. She is a frequent user of local, regional, national and international archives.

Genevieve Weber is a settler archivist and heritage professional. After completing her MAS (First Nations Concentration Curriculum) she worked with and for many First Nations, including the Nisga’a Nation, the Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nations, and communities represented in the MOA (Museum of Anthropology) collections. During her time at the BC Archives Genevieve was the community liaison for the archives and was involved in numerous access, digitization, shared stewardship, and repatriation projects.

Format:

The workshop will be delivered using Zoom webinar software. Zoom is free to download and links will be provided to participants before the workshop starts. Participants will need access to a computer with sound/speakers to view the PowerPoint training slides and participate in discussions.

The workshop schedule will include morning and afternoon breaks along with a 60 min lunch break.

Archives 101: Archival Practice with Indigenous Organizations

Workshop overview:

This 2-day in-person workshop will focus on preservation and processing archives through discussion and hands-on examples and will be of interest to Tribal/First Nations Government administrators, archivists, cultural memory keepers, community members, and students working to support and develop Indigenous archives programs.

Participants will learn:
- how to create a foundation for developing an archives program and practical approaches for managing legacy/backlog records;
- appraisal strategies;
- handing records and fostering safe storage and research environments;
- beneficial supplies;

- how to process records created on different media formats (textual records, graphic records, audio-visual and sound recordings);
- light conservation actions including document repair, cleaning, and rehousing.

Woven throughout the discussion topics will be reflections on how western archival practices can be balanced and integrated to support Indigenous practices and protocols of knowledge sharing. Guest speakers will share their experiences working with Indigenous archives. Participants will take home a box of useful supplies to help them with their work!

Upon registration, participants will be asked to complete a brief survey to identify interests and questions that will be incorporated into the workshop materials and discussions.

Instructors:

Training will be delivered by the AABC’s Education and Advisory Services Coordinator, Lisa Glandt, and Indigenous Co-trainer, Hailey Eli. Lisa and Hailey are excited to bring their collective learned and lived experiences to the workshop learning.

Format:

Registration for this in-person workshop includes coffee breaks & lunch for both days. Workshop participants are responsible for any applicable travel costs and accommodations to/from the workshop.
